Texas A&M DB Jermod McCoy Enters Transfer Portal After One Season
Texas A&M sophomore defensive back Jermod McCoy entered the NCAA transfer portal Friday, becoming the latest Aggies player to seek a new program after just one season under head coach Mike Elko. The former 4-star recruit started six games in 2025 but saw his playing time decrease late in the season.
McCoy's departure comes as Texas A&M undergoes significant roster turnover following a 7-6 campaign. At least 15 scholarship players have entered the portal since December, including several defensive backs. The 6'1" cornerback from Whitehouse, Texas was considered a potential breakout candidate after intercepting two passes early in the season.
The "Jermod McCoy" search spike coincides with the April 30 deadline for undergraduate players to enter the portal while maintaining immediate eligibility. College football fans across Texas are tracking the movement of in-state talent, particularly after McCoy received interest from TCU, Baylor and Houston during his original recruitment.
Texas A&M's defensive backfield now faces depth concerns heading into summer workouts. The Aggies signed three freshman DBs in their 2026 class but may need to pursue additional transfers. McCoy becomes one of the more coveted available defensive backs, with his combination of size (195 lbs) and SEC experience.
Transfer portal analyst Greg Smith of 247Sports noted McCoy's potential fit at several Power 5 programs: "He showed flashes against elite competition. A team needing boundary corner help could take a flyer." The portal window for undergraduate players closes Monday at midnight ET.
McCoy's decision follows Texas A&M's spring game last weekend, where he worked primarily with the second-team defense. The Aggies open their 2026 season September 3 against Notre Dame in College Station.
