Zurich Classic Format Changes Spark Debate Among Golf Fans
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans has announced significant format changes for its 2026 tournament, triggering mixed reactions from PGA Tour players and golf enthusiasts. The team event, scheduled for April 23-26 at TPC Louisiana, will now feature a modified alternate-shot format during Saturday's third round instead of the traditional four-ball play.
Tournament organizers revealed the adjustments Wednesday, explaining they aim to increase drama and strategy in the final rounds. The changes come as the event gains prominence following last year's thrilling playoff between defending champions Patrick Cantlay/Xander Schauffele and rising stars Sahith Theegala/Will Zalatoris.
"We want to test partnerships in new ways while maintaining the event's unique team spirit," said Zurich Classic executive director Steve Worthy. The tournament will keep its popular four-ball (best ball) format for Thursday and Friday before switching to alternate shot on Saturday, then returning to four-ball for Sunday's finale.
Several PGA Tour players have voiced opinions on social media. Justin Thomas tweeted: "Love the Zurich trying new things - alternate shot under pressure will separate the real teams." However, some fans argue the changes disrupt the event's identity as golf's most relaxed team competition.
The format discussion coincides with increased attention on team golf following the PGA Tour's partnership with Saudi-backed LIV Golf. Sports analysts suggest the Zurich Classic modifications could influence future team event structures across professional golf.
Television ratings for the Zurich Classic have grown 38% since 2022, with this year's edition airing on Golf Channel and CBS. The 2026 field is expected to feature several top-ranked duplications vying for the $8.6 million purse.
Local New Orleans businesses anticipate strong crowds, as the tournament typically generates $30 million for the regional economy. Hospitality packages for the 2026 event went on sale this week, with early demand reportedly exceeding previous years.
Golf fans can expect more format details when the full 2026 PGA Tour schedule releases next month. The Zurich Classic remains the tour's only official team event, a distinction it's held since converting from individual play in 2017.
