Resorts World NYC, the Queens-based casino and entertainment complex, is facing growing criticism over its proposed $5 billion expansion plan. The project, announced earlier this week, would add a full-scale Las Vegas-style casino to the existing racino facility, but local residents and advocacy groups are pushing back over concerns about increased traffic and gambling addiction risks.
The backlash has gained momentum after community meetings this week drew hundreds of attendees, many voicing opposition. "This isn't what our neighborhood needs," said Queens resident Maria Gonzalez at a heated town hall meeting Wednesday night. "We already deal with congestion from JFK Airport - now they want to bring in thousands more cars daily?"
The expansion proposal comes as New York state considers issuing three downstate casino licenses, with Resorts World positioning itself as a frontrunner. The Genting Group-owned property currently operates as a video lottery terminal facility but aims to transition into a full-service casino with table games, a hotel tower, and live entertainment venues.
Supporters argue the project would create 5,000 union construction jobs and 3,000 permanent positions. "This is about economic opportunity for Queens families," said Local 79 construction union representative Tom O'Brien. However, addiction counselors warn the expansion could exacerbate gambling problems in the area, which already has one of the highest rates of gambling-related 911 calls in the city.
The controversy has spilled onto social media, with #StopResortsWorldNYC trending locally on Twitter. Opponents have organized a protest scheduled for May 15 outside the casino property. Meanwhile, the New York State Gaming Commission is expected to make a decision on the casino licenses by late 2026.
Resorts World NYC opened in 2011 as the first legal gambling venue in New York City. The current expansion debate reflects broader tensions as state officials weigh the economic benefits of casino gaming against community impacts.
