Rep. David Scott Faces Ethics Probe Over Campaign Finance Allegations

Congressman David Scott (D-GA) is under scrutiny after the House Ethics Committee announced an investigation into alleged campaign finance violations. The probe, confirmed Wednesday, centers on whether Scott improperly used campaign funds for personal expenses. The development has sparked bipartisan calls for transparency as the 2026 midterms approach.

The Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) referred the case after finding "substantial reason to believe" funds were misused. Documents reviewed by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution show $120,000 in questionable expenditures, including luxury hotel stays and vehicle leases. Scott’s office denies wrongdoing, calling the allegations "politically motivated."

Scott, who chairs the House Agriculture Committee, represents Georgia’s 13th District. The 12-term Democrat faces primary challengers who’ve seized on the controversy. The National Republican Congressional Committee has already launched attack ads targeting vulnerable Democrats in swing districts.

Ethics experts note this marks the third campaign finance investigation this year. The House voted Tuesday to tighten disclosure rules, but reforms won’t apply retroactively. Scott must submit financial records by May 15 as the committee determines whether to recommend sanctions.

Georgia voters expressed mixed reactions at a Smyrna town hall Wednesday. "We deserve answers," said retired teacher Linda Caldwell, while union leader Marcus Johnson countered, "This smells like a smear campaign." The probe comes as Scott sponsors a major farm bill, with some colleagues now questioning his committee leadership.

Trending searches for Scott surged 480% after CNN reported the investigation. Political analysts suggest the case could impact tight House races, with Democrats holding a narrow 218-217 majority. The Ethics Committee hasn’t set a timeline for concluding its review.
