Masters 2026 Payout Hits Record $20 Million As Final Round Nears

The 2026 Masters Tournament is set to award a record $20 million purse, with the winner taking home $3.6 million, as the final round tees off Sunday at Augusta National. The payout marks a 14% increase from 2025, reflecting golf's growing revenue and the prestige of the season's first major championship.

Interest in the prize money surged Saturday night after leaderboard frontrunner Jordan Spieth acknowledged the financial stakes in a post-round interview. "It's not why we play, but it sure doesn't hurt," said Spieth, who could claim his second green jacket. The topic trended nationally as fans debated whether the payout adequately rewards players competing in grueling conditions.

Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley confirmed the purse breakdown Sunday morning. The runner-up will earn $2.16 million, while even the 50th-place finisher guarantees $37,800. This year's total eclipses the PGA Championship's $18.5 million purse from 2025, though still trails LIV Golf's $25 million team events.

Tiger Woods, making his 30th Masters appearance, praised the increased compensation. "These purses help grow the game at every level," he told ESPN after making the cut. The payout discussion comes as LIV Golf defectors like Jon Rahm compete alongside PGA Tour loyalists, highlighting golf's ongoing financial divide.

Viewership for Saturday's third round jumped 22% year-over-year, according to Nielsen, suggesting strong interest in both the competition and its historic payday. The winner's check alone exceeds the entire 1996 Masters purse of $2.7 million when adjusted for inflation.

Golf analysts note the payout reflects Augusta National's $150 million annual revenue from sponsorships, merchandise, and broadcasting rights. Unlike other majors, the Masters controls all commercial aspects without external title sponsors. Final-round coverage begins at 2 p.m. ET on CBS.
