Joint Base Andrews Temporarily Closes After Security Breach

Joint Base Andrews, a critical military installation near Washington, D.C., was temporarily locked down Monday morning following an unauthorized security breach. The incident triggered heightened alerts as the base houses Air Force One and serves as a key hub for national security operations.

Base officials confirmed the breach occurred around 7:30 a.m. ET when an individual bypassed initial security checkpoints. The suspect was detained within 30 minutes, but not before triggering a full-scale emergency response. No weapons or explosives were found.

The lockdown disrupted flights, including some military transport operations, and forced delays for personnel reporting for duty. The base resumed normal operations by 10:15 a.m. after a thorough security sweep.

The incident comes just weeks after a similar breach at nearby Fort McNair raised concerns about vulnerabilities in D.C.-area military facilities. Pentagon officials have ordered a review of access protocols at Joint Base Andrews and other installations.

Maryland lawmakers called for immediate hearings on the breach. "This is the second security lapse near the capital in a month," said Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.). "We need answers."

Joint Base Andrews is trending nationally as Americans express concern over military base security. The base last made headlines in 2021 when it received Afghanistan evacuation flights. Monday's incident marks its first security lockdown since 2015.

Military police and the FBI are investigating how the individual breached initial security. Officials have not released the suspect's identity or potential motives. The base remains on heightened alert while the probe continues.
