Indiana University Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, Campus On Lockdown
A shooting at Indiana University's Bloomington campus left one person dead and triggered a campus-wide lockdown Monday morning. The incident occurred near the School of Public Health around 10:30 a.m., sending students and faculty scrambling for safety as police responded.
University police confirmed the suspect was taken into custody within an hour of the shooting. Authorities have not released the victim's identity or a possible motive, but confirmed the shooting appeared targeted rather than random.
The lockdown was lifted by early afternoon, though classes remain canceled through Tuesday. Students described chaotic scenes as emergency alerts blared across campus. "We barricaded in a classroom for two hours," said junior Emma Reynolds. "No one knew if the shooter was still out there."
The shooting comes amid heightened concerns about campus safety nationwide. Indiana University had recently updated its active shooter protocols following last year's Michigan State University attack. University President Pamela Whitten called it "a tragic day for our community" in a statement.
Bloomington police and FBI agents are assisting with the investigation. Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb ordered flags lowered to half-staff, calling the violence "senseless." The university will hold a vigil Wednesday evening at Dunn Meadow.
This marks the 14th school shooting in the U.S. this year according to the K-12 School Shooting Database. The incident is trending nationally as parents and students demand stronger campus safety measures. Counseling services are available for affected students at the IU Health Center.
