Houston Rockets Fire Head Coach After Disappointing Season

The Houston Rockets have parted ways with head coach Ime Udoka following a disappointing 2025-26 NBA season. The decision, announced Friday morning, comes after the team failed to make the playoffs for the third consecutive year.

Udoka, who was hired in 2023, compiled a 98-146 record during his three-year tenure. The Rockets finished 12th in the Western Conference this season with a 33-49 record, despite high expectations after acquiring several key players last offseason.

General Manager Rafael Stone said in a statement that the organization needs "a new voice and direction" to develop its young core. The move comes as no surprise to NBA analysts, as rumors about Udoka's job security had circulated for weeks.

The coaching change is trending nationally as the Rockets remain one of the NBA's most storied franchises. Houston fans had hoped this would be the season the team returned to playoff contention after its post-James Harden rebuild.

Potential replacements already being discussed include former Lakers coach Darvin Ham and current Celtics assistant Sam Cassell. The Rockets plan to conduct a thorough search, with player development being the top priority for their young roster.

Star guard Jalen Green tweeted his appreciation for Udoka shortly after the announcement. Several players reportedly expressed frustration with the team's inconsistent performance throughout the season.

The Rockets join the Charlotte Hornets as NBA teams currently without a head coach. Houston's ownership group is expected to take an active role in the hiring process, with a decision likely before the NBA Draft in June.
